In an effort to reduce energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and to save money on operations, building occupants at McGill are being given access to this innovative software tool. Through this initiative, University Services wish to foster change, catalyze ideas, and stimulate projects that will contribute to make McGill a leader in sustainability. How does it work?

Pulse’s software engine communicates with McGill’s energy metering system to collect energy data. The software tracks the exact amount of energy being consumed at any given moment, analyzes it, and communicates it to you in real-time via this dashboard. Upon completion of this project in mid 2012, Pulse will monitor electricity, steam, natural gas, chilled water, and hot water consumption in more than 50 academic, student, and residence buildings located on the Downtown and Macdonald campuses.

How is it used?

For occupants, the dashboard lets you see the real-time effects of your energy saving measures such as turning off the lights at night, lowering the heat by a degree, or any of the other actions listed in the Tips tab. You will be able to see the direct impact of your behaviour within a building, demonstrating that you are an important part of the energy conservation effort at McGill. You can also learn about green features implemented in your building from the Green Features section located at the bottom of the page.
